Europroject Education without frontiers

Conference Leiria (POR) – november 2024

For five days, delegates from 18 schools of the Europroject team, gathered in Leiria, Portugal, for the AIcademy Conference at Escola Secundária Francisco Rodrigues Lobo.

The conference opened with a ceremony that set the stage for an event that would be as much about human connection as it was about technology. The coordinator of this event, Alcinda Goulart, warmly welcomed the delegations, emphasizing how AI and emotional intelligence must go hand in hand. A powerful video presentation highlighted Leiria’s blend of history and innovation, reinforcing the idea that while technology propels us forward, it is culture and collaboration that give it a purpose. The hosting school’s headmaster, Nelson Serôdio, and the newly appointed president of the Europroject steering committee, Pascal Carpentier, also addressed the audience, highlighting the importance of teamwork and shared vision.

A key moment of the conference was the networking business session, where participants were led to reflect about the results of the previous conference and laid the groundwork for future events and partnerships. The following day was dedicated to discussions on AI in education, featuring an insightful lecture by guest expert Geert Ringoot. His presentation sparked thought-provoking group discussions on AI’s benefits, challenges, and applications, allowing participants to exchange best practices and explore strategies for integrating AI into their schools.

But the AIcademy Conference wasn’t just about technology—it was also about cultural exchange. Delegates explored Leiria’s historic city center, walked through the medieval corridors of the Leiria Castle, and visited the monasteries of Batalha and Alcobaça. The journey ended on the cliffs of Nazaré Beach, where participants took in the spectacular views, relaxed, and strengthened connections beyond the conference room.

The farewell dinner was at Quinta do Paúl, where Delegates were treated to traditional Portuguese cuisine, live Fado performance and a shared playlist for dancing. This was a reminder that education is a lifelong journey, and that the seeds planted during this conference will continue to grow.

The AIcademy Conference strengthened our network. Everyone left inspired, carrying new approaches and partnerships to develop on.
